In January 2025, Relay Trust had the privilege of attending the enthronement of Archbishop Gilbert, the new Primate of the Province of the Indian Ocean. Shumi Kupara and Ella Marshall represented the Trust, joining delegates from across Madagascar, Mauritius, and the Seychelles for what proved to be a moving and unifying occasion.
The journey was marked by warm hospitality, vibrant worship, and many opportunities for conversation, both formal and informal. From the moment of arrival in Fianarantsoa, it was clear that this was more than a ceremonial event; it was a gathering of a family of churches, committed to a shared future.
The enthronement itself was held at the cathedral on Sunday 19th January; a five-hour service rich in symbolism, joy, and cultural beauty. Highlights included the handover from Archbishop Wong, stirring speeches, and an unforgettable performance of Handel’s Messiah in Malagasy. But perhaps most striking was the spirit of unity that marked the day: clergy, laity, local leaders, and international guests all celebrating what God is doing across the province.
Throughout the visit, the team had great conversations with leaders, particularly Archbishop Gilbert and the provincial secretary, Reverend Berthier. These conversations touched on key priorities, including the development of training across the province. There was also strong enthusiasm for hosting a province-wide conference, to provide space to reflect, plan, and align around shared goals.
What stood out most was the central role the Church plays in the life of the community. Whether through liturgy, music, or simple fellowship, the Church in Madagascar is a source of hope and unity for many. And despite the inevitable challenges, there is a clear determination to serve with faith and joy.
The Relay Trust team returned home encouraged. This visit was a reminder of the power of presence, of listening well, and of the Spirit’s quiet work through ordinary faithfulness. Please continue to pray for Archbishop Gilbert, for the Church in Madagascar, and for the growing partnerships across the Province of the Indian Ocean.
