SEAN Training in Angola – May 2024
In January 2024, a comprehensive training programme for catechists and evangelists was launched across the four Anglican dioceses of Angola: Cristo Rei, Bom Pastor, Divina Esperança, and Centro & Sul de Angola. The training classes are distributed across these regions, with each trainer overseeing three classes, each comprising 10-15 students. The locations range from urban and suburban to remote areas, often presenting significant accessibility challenges.
The project aims to equip catechists and evangelists in Angola to support the growth of the Anglican Church throughout the country. Many of these catechists and evangelists are already active in ministry, supporting clergy and sometimes leading up to four congregations within their diocese. The Relay Trust is committed to supporting the training of these dedicated ministers to ensure they are fully equipped to fulfil their calling and mission within the Church.
The training programme is expected to last a total of 3 years. The training material chosen by the bishops are three books, developed and widely used by SEAN International: The Abundant Life, The Big Picture and The Life of Christ. The students have just completed the first book and are expected to start the second in mid-June.
Lessons are held weekly, and while trainers endeavour to meet students in their local communities, some students must walk distances of up to 134 km to attend the training sessions. This is a testament to the dedication and commitment of these students, who spare no effort to make the most of this opportunity.
A total of 687 students are enrolled across the four dioceses – 43% of the students are female, and 57% are male.
This ambitious project has demonstrated significant progress and adaptation within the first few months. The students are highly motivated, and the training materials are both clear and culturally relevant. This positive development underscores the project’s potential to significantly impact the Anglican Church’s growth and outreach in Angola.
The Relay Trust is delighted to support this initiative and witness the remarkable work God is doing in the Anglican Church in Angola.
