Visiting the Dioceses of West Africa

In July 2024, Doug Ingram (DI), Shumi Kupara (SK), and Ella Marshall (EM) from the Relay Trust (RT) visited West Africa to strengthen ties with the Internal Province of West Africa (IPWA). Their journey included stops in the Gambia, Freetown, Bo, and Liberia, focusing on key strategic discussions and site visits to deepen relationships and plan for future growth.

The visit to the Diocese of the Gambia was particularly significant, as it marked the first extended trip to the region beyond the Bishop’s consecration. Operating in a predominantly Muslim context presents many challenges for the Anglican Church, but the diocese is making progress. Under Bishop Kojo’s leadership, plans are underway to relocate the diocesan centre from Banjul to areas with larger populations, which will allow the Church to engage more effectively with the community. The Timothy Leadership Training (TLT) programme currently being implemented in the Gambia is having a profound impact, equipping clergy with the tools to better serve their congregations.

In Freetown, the team received a warm welcome from Bishop Thomas Wilson. Their time here included a visit to Mount Zion, a centre for training and spiritual renewal. A planning session was held to discuss the future of training programmes at the centre, focusing on how it can continue to serve clergy across West Africa.

The team then travelled to Bo, where they were hosted by Bishop Solomon. He shared his ambitious vision for the future, which includes establishing two new dioceses by 2035. The visit included a tour of key infrastructure projects, such as the Bishop’s Court and newly completed training facilities. Discussions also touched on potential income-generating projects to support evangelism.

Finally, in Liberia, the focus was on expanding mission areas and increasing the diocese’s involvement with Mount Zion’s clergy training programme. Bishop James led the team through visits to several churches and shared the diocese’s plans for long-term sustainability, which include real estate development and agriculture projects. These initiatives are designed to ensure the diocese’s financial independence and its ability to continue its mission effectively.

This visit was a significant milestone for the Relay Trust and IPWA, marking the continuation of a fruitful partnership. Please pray for the ongoing collaboration between RT and the dioceses as they work to overcome infrastructure challenges and build sustainable futures. We also ask for prayers for the upcoming training sessions at Mount Zion, that they may equip leaders with wisdom and grace to guide the Internal Province of West Africa.
