Equipping Local Leaders in Assosa Ethiopia

Let me share something encouraging from Assosa, western Ethiopia. Back in March 2025, 28 church leaders came together from two mission centres—Sherkole and Tsore. Over three weeks, these leaders studied Scripture, prayed earnestly, and prepared themselves for faithful service to their local churches. This gathering was the second training event of the BUILD (Biblical Understanding for Integral Leadership Development) training programme, hosted by the Anglican Diocese of the Horn of Africa, supported by local facilitators and visiting clergy.

Classes took place at the CMF International compound from early morning to mid-afternoon, covering three crucial modules; deepening understanding of Scripture, church leadership, and practical ministry. Each day began with devotions and prayer, setting the tone for what proved to be a time of genuine unity and fellowship.

What was remarkable was seeing the diversity among participants, drawn from different ethnic backgrounds, various church traditions, some even recent converts from Islam, and a few with limited formal education. But they all shared a common hunger to learn and serve better. Group discussions played a key role, with each person bringing real-life experiences to the table, working through what ministry truly means in their context.

Of the initial 28, 24 took the final exam.  But the true measure of success isn’t exams or certificates; it’s transformation. Leaders shared openly about how the training gave clarity and confidence for preaching, leading prayer, and supporting their congregations more effectively. The Diocese recognises ongoing follow-up is critical, especially with leaders returning to remote areas, even crossing borders. Efforts are underway to provide continued support through regular communication and visits, ensuring the training genuinely bears the fruit it promises.

Looking forward, another semester is scheduled for November or December 2025, and there’s a tangible sense of enthusiasm to keep pressing forward. Students and staff alike have grasped the enormous value of this investment in people, seeing firsthand the real transformation possible when local churches equip their own leaders.

At Relay Trust, we count it a privilege to stand alongside the Diocese in Assosa. This is their mission; our role is to serve and support them as they carry this vital work forward.  Together, we trust the Church will continue to grow, strong local leaders will continue to emerge, and the Gospel will move forward, village by village, leader by leader.
